The Truth About Egg Pricing: Why Small Farm Eggs Are Worth Every Penny

Let's Talk About Egg Prices (And Why They Were Never Meant to Be Cheap)

Have you noticed the buzz about egg prices lately?

I've been thinking about this a lot…

Here's something that might surprise you... Those "cheap" eggs we've all gotten used to seeing in grocery stores were NEVER actually cheap to begin with.

They're what's called a "loss leader" - items that stores intentionally price super low (sometimes even below their cost!) just to get you in the door. Once you're there, they know you'll fill your cart with other items that have much higher markups.

Grocery stores intentionally price certain staple items—like eggs, milk, and those famous $4.99 rotisserie chickens—below their actual cost. They're willing to lose money on these items because they know once you're in the store, you'll fill your cart with other products that have much higher profit margins.

This got me thinking about how blessed we are... We get to mentor a wonderful farming family who raises hens just for us… and they do it the right way - with plenty of space to scratch and peck, eating bugs and grass just as Our Creator intended. When you see happy hens living their best life, you understand why real farming can't play the same pricing games as big stores.

Here's the simple truth about small farm egg prices... When a small farm prices their eggs, they have to consider:

  • Quality feed (because healthy hens need good nutrition!)

  • Time spent caring for the flock and land

  • Rotating the flock to fresh grass

  • Labor and packaging materials

  • The price of the young hen and other input/overhead costs

  • Transportation costs

Unlike big stores, small farms can't make up losses on eggs by selling you other things at higher prices. And honestly, if we sold our farm products below cost, we'd eventually have to close our doors - and that doesn't help anyone, especially not the families who count on us for good, clean food.

Something beautiful happens when we support local farmers... By partnering with our egg farmer friends, we get to:

  • Help educate more farmers on the benefits of regenerative farming

  • Ensure our customers have access to THE BEST quality eggs

  • Keep prices stable and fair

  • Build stronger food connections in our community

You might wonder why our egg prices haven't changed during this shortage... It's simple - we work to establish fair, sustainable pricing based on real costs. Not market speculation, not artificial scarcity - just honest pricing that reflects what it actually takes to raise healthy hens and produce quality eggs.

The most important thing to remember is this... When you choose to get your eggs through FreshORR Family Farms, you're supporting something much bigger than just your breakfast. You're investing in:

  • A better life for the animals - raised on grass, living life as they were created to live, with the freedom to scratch, peck, and express their natural behaviors

  • Better food for our bodies - our farming methods create more nutrient-dense food than you'll find in the grocery store, thanks to the natural diet and lifestyle of our animals

  • A better future for our children - through regenerative growing practices, we're actively giving back to our land, building soil health, and creating a more sustainable food system for generations to come
